TITLE: World according to Eratosthenes DATE: 194 B.C. AUTHOR: Eratosthenes of Cyrene DESCRIPTION: This slide shows a 19th century reconstruction of the world view of Eratosthenes of Cyrene (275-194 B.C.). More symmetrical than accurate, its partitions were the forerunners of parallels and meridians after Dicæarchus (Slide #111). Geographic information that was gathered by Alexander the Great and his successors was the primary source used by Eratosthenes, a scholar with vision large enough to put this information into a logical framework.
